Daishuan Tallhairreddeer GaratE
Daishuan TallHairRedDeer Garate has spent his entire life deeply rooted in Indigenous culture. From an early age, he was guided by his Uncle and Granddad, who brought him into the circle of powwows and teachings—passing on knowledge of dancing, songs, hunting, and fishing. Within his role at No Loose Braids, he is able to carry that knowledge in others in our community.
Even before graduating high school in 2020, Daishuan knew that the colonized way of life was not one he wished to follow. “I know that I am doing what I was made to do,” he says, reflecting on his commitment to walking in alignment with his ancestral path.
As an integral member of No Loose Braids, Daishuan shares his leadership and skills across many areas—Mishoon (canoe) building, paddle and wampum making, deer hide workshops, ceremony, and traditional medicine work. His relationship with the earth is one of reciprocity and respect, grounded in the teachings of his people.
When not working with No Loose Braids, Daishuan can often be found drawing, creating music, or connecting with the community through sweat lodges, drumming, and singing. He holds a deep reverence for our four-legged relatives, honoring them by ensuring every part of their being is used respectfully.
Looking ahead, Daishuan is excited to expand his journey of cultural learning by exploring and reconnecting with his Latin American heritage. Through all that he does, he continues to embody the values of stewardship, creativity, and cultural continuity.
